How to choose the right dog bed

Dogs sleep somewhere between 12 and 14 hours a day. The bed they land on matters more than most people expect — for their joints, their cleanliness, and honestly, for how long the bed itself lasts in your home. Here's how to pick one without overthinking it.

Orthopedic memory foam dog bed

Start with size, not style

The single most common mistake is buying a bed that's technically the "right" size on the label but too small for how the dog actually sleeps. Measure your dog while they're stretched out, then add about 6–8 inches. If your dog curls, a round bolster bed is perfect. If they sprawl, go rectangular with open sides.

For retailers, offering four sizes (S/M/L/XL) covers roughly 90% of the market. Mixed-size MOQs are your friend here — you don't need a full carton of each.

What's inside the cushion

Filling decides both comfort and price. The main options:

If you're building a private-label line, memory foam is where the perceived value is. Customers will pay more, and returns drop because the bed actually holds up.

Washability is non-negotiable

A bed that can't be washed properly gets thrown out fast. Look for a removable, machine-washable cover with a hidden zipper. The inner foam should have a liner that resists moisture. This is the feature pet owners tell their friends about — and the one they complain about when it's missing.

When an orthopedic bed is worth it

Any dog over about seven years, or any large breed, benefits from orthopedic support. You don't need to oversell it: just point out that the bed pays for itself by keeping the dog comfortable and the furniture fur-free. For a wholesale assortment, lead with one strong orthopedic SKU and a couple of everyday options.

The quick checklist

That's really it. Get those four right and you've picked a bed most dogs — and their owners — will be happy with. See our bed collection or talk to us about custom branding.
